What Was Springleaf Financial?

Springleaf Financial was a personal loan company with roots in American General Finance, which was founded in the early 1900s. It was acquired by AIG in 2001. Following the 2008 financial crisis, AIG divested a stake in the company to Fortress Investment Group, and the business was rebranded as Springleaf Financial Services.

Springleaf went public in 2013 and operated as a consumer finance company offering personal installment loans, many secured by vehicles or household goods, to borrowers with fair or poor credit.

The Rebrand to OneMain Financial

  • In 2015, Springleaf Financial agreed to acquire OneMain Financial from Citigroup for approximately $4.25 billion.
  • The acquisition combined Springleaf's existing branch network with OneMain's larger network, creating one of the largest consumer installment loan branch networks in the United States.
  • By early 2016, Springleaf had rebranded the entire combined company as OneMain Financial, retiring the Springleaf name.

For Former Springleaf Customers
